Dining Room Furniture: Tables, Chairs & Beyond
The right dining furniture transforms everyday meals into meaningful moments. Here’s how to choose pieces that work beautifully for years to come.
Choosing the Right Dining Table
The dining table is the social centrepiece of your home. Size, shape, and material all play critical roles. As a rule, allow 60cm of table edge per person for comfortable dining, and ensure at least 90cm of clear space on all sides of the table for easy movement.
| Table Shape | Best For | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Small spaces, intimate dining | 2–6 |
| Square | Square rooms, equal conversation | 4 |
| Rectangular | Most dining rooms, versatile | 6–12 |
| Extendable | Flexible households | 4–10+ |
| Oval | Narrow rooms with good flow | 4–8 |
Dining Chairs: Comfort & Style
Standard dining chair seat height is 45cm, designed to work with a 75cm table. When chairs have arms, check they slide under the table surface — a minimum of 25cm clearance between chair arm and table underframe is needed.
- Upholstered chairs — most comfortable for long dinners
- Wooden chairs — durable, easy to clean, timeless
- Plastic/polypropylene — lightweight, stackable, budget-friendly
- Benches — sociable, space-efficient on one side
“A dining room doesn’t need to be formal to be special. The right table and chairs will make every breakfast feel a little more intentional.”
Sideboards & Dining Storage
A sideboard (also called a buffet) provides invaluable storage for tablecloths, crockery, glasses, and serving dishes. Standard height is 80–85cm — convenient as a serving surface. Choose a depth of 40–45cm for practicality without dominating the room.
Material Guide: Dining Tables
Solid oak is the gold standard — beautiful, durable, and improvable with time. Engineered wood with a real veneer offers a similar look at lower cost. Marble and stone tops are stunning but heavy and require careful maintenance. Glass tops create an airy feel but show fingerprints easily.
Lighting Your Dining Room
A pendant light hung 70–80cm above the table surface creates intimacy and defines the dining zone. The pendant diameter should be about half the table width. Dimmer switches are essential — they transform the ambience from bright family breakfast to atmospheric dinner party with one touch.
