Home Office Furniture: Build a Space That Works
Whether you work from home full-time or just need a functional study nook, the right furniture makes all the difference to your focus and wellbeing.
Choosing Your Desk
Standard desk height is 72–75cm. For sitting work, your elbows should be at desk height when your forearms are parallel to the floor. If you’re tall or short, consider a height-adjustable (sit-stand) desk — they have become significantly more affordable and are one of the best investments for home office health.
Desk Types at a Glance
- Writing desk — minimal, clean look, best for laptop workers
- Corner desk (L-shape) — maximum surface area, ideal for dual monitors
- Standing desk — adjustable height, excellent for back health
- Secretary desk — folds closed, perfect for living room offices
- Floating wall desk — space-saving, works in tight spaces
Ergonomic Office Chairs
An ergonomic chair is arguably the most important home office purchase. Poor seating causes back pain, fatigue, and long-term postural issues. Look for: lumbar support, adjustable seat height (40–52cm range covers most adults), adjustable armrests, and a seat depth of 40–50cm.
You do not need to spend a fortune — chairs in the £150–£350 range can offer excellent ergonomics. The key is adjustment: a chair you can tune to your body is worth more than a premium chair you sit in incorrectly.
“You spend 8+ hours a day in your office chair. It deserves the same consideration as your mattress — possibly more.”
Shelving & Office Storage
Clutter is the enemy of focus. Purpose-built office shelving keeps work materials organised and accessible. Floating shelves above the desk maximise vertical space without taking floor area. A combination of open shelves (for frequently used items) and closed cabinets (for visual calm) works best.
Lighting Your Home Office
Natural light is ideal — position your desk perpendicular to windows to avoid screen glare. For artificial lighting, a dedicated desk lamp with adjustable brightness reduces eye strain significantly. Aim for 500 lux at desk level for focused work tasks.
Cable Management
It’s an overlooked purchase, but good cable management transforms an office from chaotic to calm. Look for desks with built-in cable ports, use a cable spine or trunking along the wall, and invest in a few velcro cable ties. Your future self will thank you.
